Cable car Kotor – Lovćen: From the sea to the mountain in less than 11 minutes

In 2023, Montenegro received a new significant tourist and infrastructure investment – the Kotor-Lovćen cable car, which connects the coast of the Bay of Kotor with Mount Lovćen. The project was implemented through a public-private partnership between the Government of Montenegro, the Italian company LEITNER and the member XE A group, a company XEnergy. (formerly New Volvox)

The cable car stretches over a route 3,918 meters long, overcoming a height difference of 1,316 meters, with 19 pillars and 48 gondolas. The maximum capacity of the system is 1,200 passengers per hour, and the ride from the starting station in the village of Dub (municipality of Kotor) to the final station Kuk on Lovcen takes a little less than 11 minutes. The gondolas reach speeds of up to 6 meters per second.

As part of the project, the accompanying infrastructure was built – including restaurants with panoramic views, souvenir shops, an amphitheater, parking spaces, and an attractive bobsleigh track that has become an unavoidable adrenaline experience for cable car guests. The goal is for the cable car to be not only a means of transport, but an integral part of the tourist offer.

The LEITNER Consortium –XEnergy He was granted a concession to operate the cable car for a period of 30 years, with the obligation to pay a concession fee.

Representatives of the Government and local authorities point out that the project is important in the context of the development of sustainable tourism, relieving traffic on the section towards Njegusi, as well as improving safety and access to the Lovcen National Park.

With the commissioning of the cable car, Montenegro got a new modern attraction that connects two key points of its tourist offer – Kotor as a UNESCO protected city on the coast, and Lovcen as a symbol of Montenegrin history and natural heritage.
