PG1–PG4: Modernization of the capital's electricity infrastructure

The project for the construction of a cable transmission line between the PG1 and PG4 substations is one of the most important initiatives for the modernization and improvement of the power grid of Podgorica, the capital of Montenegro. Electricity transmission infrastructure in urban areas requires a particularly careful approach due to population density, the need for a stable power supply and limited spatial possibilities for carrying out works.

The project includes the design, delivery of equipment and construction works on a new underground cable line over 9 kilometers long, which will connect two key points of the energy system in the inner urban core of Podgorica.

The implementation of the project is led by the company XEnergy d.o.o., while the investor is Montenegrin Electric Transmission System (CGES).

Given that it is about laying an underground cable through extremely frequent and infrastructurally burdened zones of the city, the project also includes the execution of complex excavations, adaptation of existing routes, as well as the execution of construction works within the PG1 and PG4 substations.

The aim of the project is to replace worn-out overhead lines that are nearing the end of their service life and to replace them with a modern, reliable and safer underground transmission system. The new underground transmission line PG1–PG4 significantly improves the stability and security of the capital's power supply, reduces losses and risks caused by weather disasters and technical failures, and contributes to the resilience of the power system. At the same time, the removal of overhead lines improves the visual identity of urban space, reduces the impact on the environment and opens up space for smarter and more sustainable energy infrastructure.

The PG1–PG4 project shows how complex infrastructure challenges in the urban environment can be solved through technical innovation, engineering expertise and strategic planning. Through a partnership with the U.S., the company XEnergy It contributes to the development of a modern, safe and efficient energy system of Montenegro, ready to respond to the needs of the population and economy of the 21st century.
