When we turn on the light in the apartment, charge the phone or turn on the air conditioning during the summer heat, we rarely think about where the electricity actually comes from. Electricity has become such a normal part of our daily lives that we often forget how complex a system is needed to safely reach our homes, businesses, hotels and industries.
It is in this system that substations play one of the most important roles. Although we see them every day along the roads, near settlements or industrial zones, we rarely think about the fact that without them, neither cities, nor tourism, nor the economy would function.
What is a substation and what is it for?
A substation is an electric power facility whose main task is the transformation and distribution of electricity. Electricity is generated and transmitted at very high voltages to enable efficient transmission over long distances. However, such voltage is not safe for everyday use in households, business facilities or industry.
As a result, substations reduce or adjust the voltage to a level that can be safely used.
Without substations, there would be no stable electricity supply in Podgorica, Nikšić, Bar, Budva, Bijelo Polje or any other part of Montenegro.
How do they work?
The basic element of any substation is a transformer, a device that allows you to change the voltage level of electricity.
In addition to transformers, substations also contain:
- The protection systems,
- switches,
- measuring devices,
- The command systems,
- grounding systems,
- automation and monitoring equipment.
All these components together enable the safe and stable operation of the power system and reduce the possibility of failures and power outages.
Behind it all are a large number of engineers, technicians and teams who work every day to make the system stable and reliable, even when we don't think about it.
Types of substations in Montenegro
There are several types of substations in the Montenegrin power system.
Portable substations
Large transmission substations connect the main sources of energy to the state transmission network. They play a key role in the transmission of electricity between different regions of the country.
Substations connected to hydroelectric power plants are particularly important, such as:
- HPP Perućica
- HPP Piva
Through them, the energy produced in the north and in the central part of the country reaches the coast and other consumer centers.
Distribution substations
Distribution substations serve cities, settlements, hotels, industrial zones and business facilities.
These are the substations that we most often see near buildings, schools, business facilities or roads, often without being aware of how important they are for the everyday life of the community.
Why is it so important during the summer season?
During the tourist season, electricity consumption in Montenegro increases significantly. Hotels are operating at full capacity, air conditioners are working almost continuously, and total consumption in hospitality, tourism and households is also increasing.
During these periods, substations play a key role in maintaining the stability of the power system and preventing major power outages.
We may notice them the least then, but that's when they work under the greatest load.
Modernization of substations and smart grid
Today's modern substations are used by:
- digital management systems,
- SCADA systems,
- automation,
- remote monitoring,
- advanced protection systems.
Such solutions allow:
- faster fault detection,
- More efficient management of the network.
- reduction of energy losses,
- greater reliability of the system.
- Better energy efficiency.
The modernization of substations is an important part of the development of the so-called "smart grid" system and energy transition.
Substations and renewable energy sources
The development of solar power plants and wind farms in Montenegro further increases the importance of quality electricity infrastructure.
Without modern substations, it is not possible:
- connecting solar power plants,
- integration of wind farms,
- stable transfer of energy produced,
- secure network management.
That is why substations represent one of the foundations of the future development of renewable energy sources in Montenegro.
XEnergy – experience in the implementation of substations and energy projects
When it comes to the implementation of energy projects and substations in Montenegro, the company also plays an important role XEnergy.
Our company deals with:
- substations,
- In the case of energy systems,
- power lines,
- Medium and high voltage electrical installations,
- the supply of electrical equipment,
- Implementation of complex infrastructure projects.
The experience gained on projects in Montenegro and the region allows us to be a reliable partner in the development of modern electricity infrastructure and modern substations.
Allows for day-to-day use of electricity
Although we often pass by them without much attention, substations play a key role in everyday life.
They enable:
- stable power supply for households,
- A school and a hospital,
- The operation of the industry,
- the development of tourism,
- The growth of the economy,
- integration of renewable energy sources.
That is why substations are not only technical facilities, but the basis for everyday activities. We may not notice them often, but without them, everyday life would look completely different.
